Accessible Immersive Education for Caregivers

Societal Need

The Caregiver Gap Is Growing. Dementia Isn’t Waiting

The demographic shift in many global regions that flips the ratio of young to old leaves a glaring imbalance in supply of caregivers for the millions of older adults with dementia. Caregiving carries a societal burden due to the high level of need and the extended duration of care.

Concurrent with the need for more caregivers is the job losses due to automation that will move more of the workforce into human caring roles. To meet the needs of both sides of the caregiver economy, a more effective and scalable solution to educate caregivers must be realized.

Inequitable access to dementia caregiver education, particularly for rural, low-income, and non-English-speaking communities, compounds the challenges of caregiver shortages. Caregivers who are inadequately trained are more likely to burnout or leave their jobs. The remaining poorly trained caregivers provide a lower quality of care to our most vulnerable older adults.

Positive Approach XR is designed to align with and advance multiple priorities of public health aging master plans. The program equips caregivers to support aging in place (Housing Accessibility), enhances culturally competent care (Healthcare Delivery), and strengthens the caregiver workforce (Workforce Development). Positive Approach XR (PAXR) transforms the learning process from passive transfer of information to simulated experiences that prepare caregivers for the challenges and nuances of dementia care.

Project Description

Transforming dementia care through XR

Positive Approach XR (PAXR) is an immersive training initiative designed to transform dementia care education through Extended Reality (XR). Developed by Content for Good in partnership with Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care® (PAC), BrightStar Care, and Santa Clara University (SCU), PAXR blends the emotional impact of immersive video with the proven effectiveness of PAC’s curriculum.

The training places participants directly into realistic dementia care scenarios, where they make informed choices about the provision of care, experience the outcomes, and refine their skills in a safe, supportive environment. This approach fosters empathy, patience, and problem-solving abilities that are difficult to achieve through traditional training alone. The modules are accessible on Mobile, Web, and VR to maximize the reach.

By combining immersive storytelling (Content for Good), hands-on facilitation (PAC), and rigorous research (SCU), PAXR is pioneering the next generation of caregiver training—equipping healthcare teams and families with the tools they need to provide compassionate, person-centered care.
